About the Course
The origins of photography began with black and white images and for many a finely crafted black and white print is still the ultimate form of creative photographic expression.This course covers both the photographic and digital darkroom aspects of making high quality black and white images.
This five day workshop taught by Seán Duggan, co-author of "The Creative Digital Darkroom", "Photoshop Artistry" and "Real World Digital Photography" is a celebration of the black and white photograph. It is a combination of creative seeing, camera technique and leveraging the power and control of the digital darkroom. We will practice our photographic technique durning the week on location shoots with the aim of visualizing and creating images in black and white. Back in the digital lab, we will explore a wide range of essential Photoshop and Lightroom techniques as we work at perfecting our color digital captures into finely honed black and white prints
We'll begin by taking a look at the work of some of the masters to identify the qualities that make a good black and white image. Then throughout the week we'll use a combination of observational skills, camera work and Photoshop technique to realize those qualities in our images. Although we will be making new images during the week, students are also encouraged to bring their own images to work with during the week, especially those which you have wanted to perfect for a long time. The days will be divided between photography, presentations and tutorials to help you learn new techniques and supervised lab sessions where you can apply those new skills to your own images.
Some of the topics for the week will include:
* How to read the qualities of light and interpret how the color scene you see with your eyes will render as a black and white image.
* The Zone System and how it translates to a digital image.
* Converting from Color to Black and White
* Scanning black and white negatives to capture the maximum contrast and tonal range.
*Tonal adjustments and correction using Levels, Curves, and Layer/Blend Mode combinations.
* Flexible dodging and burning techniques
* How to create precise masks for localized tonal adjustments.
* Digital Toning, Split-Toning, Duotones, and Color Tinting.
* Infra-Red film effects; adding film grain, and techniques for creating a distressed, "antique" look.
* Overview of current output options for digital black and white
* Making the Fine Print
This is an intermediate to advanced course that offers participants the tools to apply wet darkroom techniques for black & white images to the digital darkroom. Course participants should already be familiar and comfortable with the user interface in Photoshop, though no specific experience working digitally with black & white images is required.

This consultation will take place via the phone and using online meeting technology that will enable you to share computer screens and view work in progress and go over digital darkroom technique.
