This is an intermediate to advanced level course. Participants should know how to optimize images in Photoshop, such as making tonal and color adjustments, and already be making prints of their own images. Field photography will provide the opportunity to improve photographic skills in addition to learning to use digital tools. Digital camera gear is required for the field photography portion of this course, and you should be comfortable with the basic operation of your equipment. |
Join George Lepp for five days of photographing the Central Coast of California. January has the most dynamic conditions to capture landscapes and tide pool images at their best. With a little luck we’ll have storm-generated waves, and the schedule shows opportunities with low tides in the tide pools of Montaña de Oro State Park.
Some of the photographic techniques that will be employed are long exposures of waves crashing over the rocks--making hundreds of momentary waterfalls; panoramas of coastal scenes along many miles of beautiful coastline; and working with the design elements that are plentiful in the Monterey shale rock formations and kelp along the Pacific shoreline. Macro techniques with flash on tide pool animals and plants will be explored during the several low tides occurring during the class. The Institute has a number of digital IR cameras that can be used by the participants, and we’ll also explore the possibilities of high-definition time-lapse movies using our digital SLR cameras.
Throughout the week, class participants will edit, optimize, and print their images at the Institute using George Lepp’s techniques to get the most from the photographic opportunities. George’s focus on work flow in the digital darkroom will be a learning bonus.

One of the best new ways to showcase our images is to present a series of original prints in coffee-table book form. Moab by Legion makes this possibility a reality with their special paper and book covers. We will start the process of laying out and printing an 8x8 book that the participants can complete upon returning home.
This class promises to be a packed week of photography on a beautiful coast line and work in one of the best digital darkroom learning centers in the country.
Who Should Attend?
This course is for digital photographers who want to expand their horizons and work alongside George Lepp to learn some of the new techniques he has perfected over the years. George guarantees to keep you so immersed in photography, the days will seem to fly by. We reiterate, this is NOT a class to learn basic Photoshop. You will be applying Photoshop principles to all the projects throughout the week, so participants should already have a good grasp of how to optimize images in Photoshop. An understanding of the fundamentals is essential for you to be able to absorb all the new Photoshop techniques George will be demonstrating.
